‘Spot light on a Song’
Happy Fourth of July music fans! It’s that time of the year again; it’s officially summer and the spirit to celebrate our great country is in full force. So today’s highlight is as Folk/ Americana at its finest. Fitting for this time and where I’m heading this weekend; Big Sur.
One Fast Move or I’m Gone: Kerouac’s Big Sur is an album by Ben Gibbard (Death Cab for Cutie) and Jay Farrar (Son Volt, Uncle Tupelo), released in 2009. The lyrics are based on the prose of Jack Kerouac’s novel Big Sur (1962). One Fast Move or I’m Gone was a result of their mutual appreciation for Kerouac’s work while recording several songs for a feature-length documentary of the same name.
Channeling the rawness and candor of Big Sur’s troubled author, the record sets Kerouac’s words to simple arrangements of guitar, piano, bass and drums, with the occasional whine of pedal steel and slide guitar. One Fast Move walks an easy line between the alt-country of Farrar and the soaring melodies of Gibbard.
If you have a little time, listen to this album in its entirety; it’s beautiful. And will bring you to a majestic place in the mountains deep in the heart of America. Be safe.
Strum a little….
