‘Spot light on a Song’
Happy Friday! I go away for a little while and came back to Fall. I love this time of year….colors change, back to school, new routines and opportunities facing you. Everything has a new filter on it for me.
And I have a great weekend staring at me because I have a ticket to go and see Wilco. Deep happy sigh.
But today I’m talking about Billy Bragg. Like peanut butter and chocolate, when you put these two together you get today’s spot light song! PURE HEAVEN.
Bragg is an English singer, songwriter. His music blends elements of folk music, punk rock and protest songs, with lyrics that mostly span political or romantic themes. His music is heavily centered on bringing about change and getting younger generations involved in causes.
Around 1996, Nora Guthrie (daughter of American folk artist Woody Guthrie) asked Bragg to set some of her father’s unrecorded lyrics to music. The result was Grammy nominated album Mermaid Avenue, collaborated with the band Wilco and Natalie Merchant. Every song is on this album is gold. But this one in particular is the first one I think of.
So go out tonight, lay a blanket on the grass and take a listen to this one while you star gaze into the night sky.
Strum a little….
